Opened on Feb. 24th, 1974, it is one of the longest-continuing operations of New Orleans’ music clubs, with live performances seven nights a week. On that first night Andrew Hall’s Society Jazz Band played and were there every Saturday for 7 years.
Many of the old-time musicians were featured, including numerous members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The Society Jazz Band left in the summer of 1981 but have played there several times since, including the 30th birthday party in 2004.

Famous Door

Hypolite “Hyp” Guinle, a boxing promoter, opened the Famous Door in 1936, naming the place after the swanky Manhattan night spot that New Orleanian Louis Prima had put on the map. Billed as the “Jazz Corner of America,” Guinle’s Famous Door at Bourbon and Conti played an important role in the midcentury traditional jazz revival.

North of Esplanade, it becomes the famous Decatur Street (with Jackson Square and nearby Café du Monde) just 2 blocks inland from the mighty Mississippi river. The oldest and best-known section of Frenchmen Street is in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood, just south from the famous French Quarter (Vieux Carré).

“The Howlin’ Wolf has a long history as one of New Orleans’ finest locally owned and operated venues. Named after the legendary bluesman Chester Burnett, New Orleans was introduced to the Howlin’ Wolf in 1988, when it opened up in Fat City. After outgrowing its’ space in a cotton warehouse, the venue relocated to what was previously the New Orleans Music Hall, in the Warehouse District.
